Why VALORANT Champions Shanghai will be the defining event of the 2026 season

VALORANT Champions will take over Shanghai this autumn, bringing 16 teams together for the final and most important international event of the 2026 VCT season. Competition begins at Jing’an Sports Center on 24 September, with the closing weekend moving to the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Pudong.

The change of venue gives the tournament two distinct phases. The smaller Jing’an setting will host the group stage and early playoff matches, where teams must survive a demanding format. The Mercedes-Benz Arena will then provide a much larger stage for the decisive series and the crowning of the 2026 world champion.

Plenty of digital entertainment will compete for attention during the three-week event, including game releases, streaming platforms and an online casino. Champions Shanghai has an advantage over most of them because every match affects a clear tournament story. One poor series can force a leading team into the lower bracket, while a second defeat can end its entire season.

How will VALORANT Champions Shanghai work?

The 16 qualified teams will be placed into four groups using the GSL format. Each group contains four teams, with every match played as a best-of-three series.

A team that wins its opening two matches advances without entering a deciding series. A team that loses twice is eliminated. The remaining sides meet in a final group match for the second qualifying place.

Only eight teams will reach the playoffs. Riot Games will use a double-elimination bracket at that stage, so one defeat does not immediately end a team’s campaign. The lower-bracket final and grand final will be played as best-of-five series, placing greater demands on map pools and preparation. Riot’s official tournament handbook confirms the competition structure.

The format rewards teams that can adapt during an event. A strong opening plan may be enough to win one series, but opponents have time to study preferred agents, repeated defensive setups and weaknesses on particular maps. Teams that rely on a narrow selection of strategies may struggle once those habits become visible.

Shanghai gives the Chinese teams a genuine home advantage

Chinese VALORANT has developed quickly since the regional league joined the VCT structure. Champions Shanghai is the clearest opportunity yet for the region to convert that progress into a world title in front of a home crowd.

JD Gaming, Xi Lai Gaming, TYLOO and EDward Gaming had already secured qualification by early September. That gives China a sizeable group of representatives rather than one home team carrying the expectations of an entire region.

The familiar environment should help with travel, practice arrangements and crowd support. International teams will need to adjust to a different time zone, local facilities and an audience likely to back the Chinese sides heavily.

Those factors cannot compensate for poor tactical decisions. They can, however, matter during a close third map or a long lower-bracket run. Communication becomes harder when thousands of spectators react to every successful defensive hold or individual play.

EDward Gaming will receive particular attention because of the organisation’s international history and established following. Xi Lai Gaming and JD Gaming have also shown that Chinese teams are no longer dependent on a single representative to challenge experienced opponents.

The Path to Champions has changed who can reach the event

The 2026 season introduced a direct route for Challenger teams to compete for places at Champions. Four Challenger sides in each eligible territory entered the Stage 2 playoffs alongside International League opposition.

This removed the need for developing teams to wait for the old Ascension process before testing themselves against established VCT organisations. A strong Challenger roster could earn access to the year’s biggest event during the same competitive season.

Riot provided qualifying Challenger teams with a $75,000 contribution towards travel, visas and attendance at the Stage 2 playoffs. The financial support addressed one of the practical problems facing independent organisations that suddenly earn a place at an international competition.

There was still an important restriction connected to Shanghai. Chinese regulations require every competitor at the event to be at least 18. A Challenger side progressing with a younger player would therefore need to alter its roster before competing at Champions. Riot outlined the new route and age requirement when it announced the 2026 VCT structure.

Opening qualification to Challenger teams increases the possibility of an unfamiliar opponent reaching Shanghai with strategies that leading organisations have rarely faced. These sides may lack experience on a major stage, but they also arrive without a long record of international matches for analysts to examine.

A deep map pool will matter more in the playoffs

Best-of-three group matches allow teams to remove their least comfortable maps during the veto. That protection becomes weaker in a best-of-five series.

The teams reaching the lower-bracket final and grand final must be ready to play across most of the active map pool. A clear weakness becomes difficult to hide once both sides have used their early bans.

This affects roster construction as well as tactical preparation. Players may need to perform several agent roles during one series, particularly if an opponent disrupts their preferred compositions. Coaches must also decide how much material to reveal during the group stage.

Using every prepared set play in the opening match may secure qualification, but it leaves more footage for later opponents. Holding too much back carries its own danger because an early defeat creates a longer route through the tournament.

The double-elimination bracket adds another complication. Teams can meet twice, giving the loser of the first series an opportunity to change its map veto and counter the setups that caused problems. Adaptability may decide those rematches more often than raw mechanical ability.

Ticketing will make attending more complicated for international supporters

Champions Shanghai uses a real-name ticketing system. International buyers must register with a valid passport and bring the same physical document to the venue. Tickets cannot be transferred or resold, and entry includes identity verification and facial recognition.

Each account can purchase a maximum of four tickets per event, with every seat connected to a unique valid ID. Supporters cannot select exact seats during the purchase process. Riot says seating information should appear in the ticket wallet roughly two or three days before each event.

Prices for the Jing’an Sports Center sessions depend on the date and ticket tier. Weekday tickets begin at ¥198, while weekend prices begin at ¥288. The rules also prohibit unofficial livestreaming, professional camera equipment and several common types of fan signage. Full conditions are available in Riot’s official Shanghai ticket announcement.

These controls reduce the usefulness of unofficial resale markets. Anyone planning to attend must make sure the passport details entered during purchase are accurate because a ticket registered under the wrong identity cannot simply be passed to another person.

The two venues should change the pressure around the tournament

Jing’an Sports Center will create a more concentrated atmosphere during the group stage. Several teams will play their most important match of the year there, even though the tournament will still have weeks left to run.

The move to the Mercedes-Benz Arena changes the scale of the event. Players who looked comfortable in the earlier venue must then perform in a much larger setting, with the trophy only a few series away.

Champions Shanghai will test more than aim and reaction speed. Teams need enough tactical depth to survive repeated analysis, a broad map pool for the best-of-five matches and the composure to handle a heavily partisan crowd.

By the time the grand final begins on 11 October, each remaining team will have survived opponents with different regional styles and preparation methods. The eventual champion will have earned the title through the most demanding format of the VCT season.
