Wipeout developer Studio Liverpool has finally gone, after ten years it has finally closed. Studio Liverpool was formed in February 2002, in February 2012 it was acquired by Sony.
Sony has acquired London-based developer Firesprite, the studio formed by former members of Wipeout’s Studio Liverpool. The deal is for an undisclosed sum, but the firm’s founder, Clive Moncur, said that it would help Sony broaden its portfolio in the casual gaming space. He told Eurogamer that the “potential is enormous” for casual games across all screens, be it mobile, tablets, gaming machines or consoles. Firespire is best known for its iOS game, Sorcery!, which was released in 2012.
A new exciting news for you folks. We are happy to announce that Sony has acquired over Firesprite, the UK developer founded by ex-members of Wipeout’s Studio Liverpool. Firesprite had previously been working with Sony on the development of Wipeout Beyond, their new title set for release on PlayStation Vita this year.

Firesprite has joined the PlayStation Studios family as the company’s 14th studio. Following the acquisitions of Housemarque, the creator of PS5-exclusive Returnal, and Nixxes, a Dutch firm specialized in PC conversion, Firesprite is the company’s third studio this year.
Firesprite is a UK-based developer best known for working with Japan Studio on the augmented reality mini-games The Playroom and The Playroom VR, which were published for the PS4 and PS VR, respectively. The Persistence, a horror shooter initially developed for PS VR but subsequently transferred to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch platforms, is the studio’s most recent project.
Ex-members of Studio Liverpool established Firesprite in 2012, and the studio has an intriguing past (Psygnosis). This is the company behind Wipeout, the futuristic racing series, as well as other famous PlayStation properties like Colony Wars and Destruction Derby.
The purchase was announced by Graeme Ankers, managing director of Firesprite, in a letter detailing the studio’s good relationship with Sony. The next project from Firesprite may be unveiled shortly.
Today is a huge day for Firesprite as we join PlayStation Studios, with Hermen and the whole PlayStation family behind us. We are eagerly anticipating the next leg of our trip!
Firesprite was established in 2012 with the goal of developing games that offer new ideas to every experience we produce. The company is based in Liverpool, in the north-west of the United Kingdom. The North-West has a long history in gaming, having produced several well-known developers, publishers, and titles like WipEout. Many of our ‘Sprites created and molded titles throughout this time period, and we are very proud of our heritage!
We’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of talented developers and publishers across the industry, and PlayStation has been a friend and co-development partner for the better part of a decade, collaborating on a number of exciting projects including The PlayRoom, Run Sackboy! Run, and The PlayRoom VR.
PlayStation also allowed us to develop our own IP, The Persistence, and provided us the creative freedom to experiment, invent, and produce a survival horror game that we are very proud of. Now, as a first-party studio, we know we have PlayStation’s full backing in continuing our tradition of blending creativity and technological innovation to provide PlayStation fans with genuinely unique experiences.
First and foremost, I’d want to express my gratitude to PlayStation and its community for the warm welcome into a family of great artists. I’d also want to express my gratitude to all of our ‘Sprites, past and present, who have contributed to the Firesprite we see today. I’m pleased of the talent we have at Firesprite, and you’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more from us all in the near future!
We’re excited to show you what we’ve been working on…… It’s just the beginning!
