A Gamergate series is in the works.
Wu hopes that the series will shine a light on the Gamergate tactics that led to Christchurch and the 6th of January.
Because nothing else of comparable significance has occurred to these oddballs, Deadline reports that Brianna Wu will be working on a Gamergate series with Mind Riot Entertainment, which will be named Gamergate! because they are equal parts creator and victim.
In case you forgot – or have gone on with your life as most normal people have – Gamergate occurred in 2014 and was sparked, in large part, by Zo Quinn’s involvement in a quid-pro-quo scenario in exchange for positive ratings for her “game” Depression Quest. That prompted the “games journalist” community to begin publishing all of the “Gamers Are Dead” pieces, exposing the industry as incestuous with itself and exposing it all on Front Street. Anita Sarkeesian’s career was also launched as a result of this, and it is still sputtering away to this day.
However, the official party position on this heinous crime is very different. “The 2014 Gamergate online campaign sparked a firestorm for its targeting of women in the gaming industry, laying the groundwork for contemporary problems of misinformation and hate,” according to Deadline. There was Gamergate before QAnon [lol], Covid-19 conspiracists [double lol], and the January 6th insurgency [omega lol]. Wu was one among the women targeted, along with Zo Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian.”
The unsuccessful two-time Congressional candidate says that the series would take a fictional look at the “origins of the widespread intimidation campaign.” Writing characters that have gone through real-life trauma may be a good place to start.
Brianna Wu and J. Brad Wilke co-created and co-wrote Gamergate, which was produced by Jonathan Keasey and Jeremy J. Dodd of Mind Riot Entertainment. The series will get off to a fantastic start since all of these individuals have collaborated to create virtually little of significance.
“We’re not going to rehash a narrative that has been recounted hundreds of times in the New York Times and Washington Post… Our series will center on fresh, fictitious characters in the business who are confronted with a terrible scenario. [I understand why you chose fictitious characters.] We can show how the tactics of Gamergate were the same ones that led to tragedies like Christchurch and January 6th by explaining how they were unable to stop the video game industry from being hijacked by the lunatic fringe [seems like they are taking liberties with the source material; have you been to Kotaku, Polygon, IGN, or Gamespot recently?],” said a very honest and sane Wu.
By the way, the Christchurch mosque shooting resulted in 51 fatalities and another 40 wounded. One person died on the scene of the Capitol Hill riot on January 6th, Ashli Babbitt, who was shot by Capitol Hill police officer Lt. Michael Byrd under questionable circumstances. As a consequence of Gamergate, a bunch of jerks had their emotions wounded, and video games were doomed for the foreseeable future. There are some very strong corollaries being drawn here. Best of luck with your next flop!
